Al Andalus Train on the Andalusian Route (Cadiz)
Cadiz is the southernmost province of the Iberian Peninsula, considered the oldest city in the west. It borders the provinces of Seville and Huelva to the north, Malaga to the east, and the Strait of Gibraltar to the south. It is worth visiting its coast or taking a tour of its white villages, not forgetting the walls of its capital, which hold all the culture and traditions that make Cadiz a unique place.
The city is popularly known as the “Silver Cup,” highlighting the grace and hospitality of its inhabitants (as demonstrated by its famous carnivals). It has its own route through all its white villages, totaling 19 towns where you can see different archaeological sites, castles, small churches, and various mountain landscapes that will make your visit to Andalusia a unique and unforgettable experience.
This city in Andalusia has impressive monuments such as the Catedral, the Murallas, the Parroquia de Santa Cruz, and the Parque Genovés, as well as some of its famous beaches like La Caleta, Santa María del Mar, and Victoria.
Regarding the history of Cadiz, it is noteworthy that Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans inhabited this province, leaving a rich historical legacy. The city was founded in 1100 B.C. by the Phoenicians. In 711, the defeat of the Visigoths at the Guadalete River allowed the Muslims to enter the province, conquering all the lands of Cadiz. It wasn’t until 1493 that the Catholic Monarchs reincorporated the city of Cadiz into the Crown.
With the discovery of America, Cadiz became the departure point for many voyages to the new continent led by Christopher Columbus, turning its ports into meeting points for cultural currents between Andalusia and America. Finally, in 1812, the first Spanish Constitution was drafted, making Cadiz the nation’s capital for three years.
Throughout the Al Andalus train itinerary, you can visit the entire south of Spain. It has different round-trip itineraries that will allow you to see many impressive and unique landscapes and get to know the most representative cities of the Andalusian community aboard this luxury train.
