Andalusian Route: Granada
Granada and its tropical coast are located on the Mediterranean Sea coastline and in the Penibetic mountain range. It borders the provinces of Malaga and Cordoba to the west, and Jaén and Almería to the north. It is a province rich in cultural, historical, and monumental heritage.
The most significant symbol of the city of Granada would undoubtedly be the Alhambra, considered the eighth wonder of the world. However, it also boasts many other attractions such as the Generalife and its famous neighborhoods like El Albaicín, Sacromonte, and Realejo, which will help you understand the culture and history of the city.
Granada preserves a historical heritage with Iberian, Roman, Nasrid, and Christian traces. The first settlements of the city date back to the 7th century BC, carried out by the Iberians. Later, the Romans conquered the area under Emperor Caesar, giving Granada the status of a municipality. Several centuries later, the Visigoths took control of the city, enhancing its civil and military importance.
During the 13th and 14th centuries, the Nasrid kingdom expanded through Granada and other important cities like Almería, Malaga, and Cadiz. In this period, Granada gained commercial significance and saw the construction of its emblem, the Alhambra. By the end of the 15th century, the union of the crowns of Castile and Aragon initiated the Reconquista, where Christian armies seized control of the city. It was in this same century that another pivotal event in Granada’s history occurred: the signing of the Capitulations of Santa Fe by Christopher Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs.
