The charm of the Alhambra and the Generalife (Granada)
The Alhambra and the Generalife are two of the most iconic and fascinating places in southern Spain, located in the city of Granada, one of the most interesting stops on the Al Andalus train route through Andalusia. These true architectural and artistic gems of the Islamic era in the Iberian Peninsula and of global recognition were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
The Alhambra, palace complex
It was built during the era of the Nazari Kingdom of Granada, between the 13th and 14th centuries. Its origins trace back to a small fortress, but it was later expanded and converted into a royal palace by the Nasrid monarchs. The Alhambra combines defensive elements with exquisite decoration, characterized by beautiful arches, intricate plasterwork, colorful tiles, and lush gardens. Inside, it houses several palaces, such as the Palace of Comares and the Palace of the Lions, as well as the impressive Hall of the Abencerrajes and the Court of the Myrtles.
The Court of the Lions (The Alhambra)
The Court of the Lions (Patio de los Leones) is one of the most prominent and emblematic spaces of the Alhambra and forms part of the monumental complex of the Alhambra.
It is located in the heart of the palace that bears its name and is one of the main courtyards. It is known for its architectural beauty, symmetry, and unique central fountain, which is surrounded by a colonnaded gallery with marble columns. This fountain, known as the Fountain of the Lions, is one of the most outstanding pieces of Islamic art in Spain.
It owes its name to the twelve lion statues that surround the fountain. Each of the lions is carved from white marble and has a water source on its back. These fountains are decorated with geometric and vegetal motifs, and water flows from their mouths. The lions symbolize power and strength, and their presence in the courtyard adds an element of majesty to the ensemble.
Today, the Court of the Lions is one of the main tourist attractions of the Alhambra and draws visitors from all over the world. Its architectural beauty, ornamental details, and serene atmosphere make this courtyard one of the most impressive places in the Alhambra and a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Al Andalus in Spain.
Generalife, garden complex
The Generalife is a set of gardens and buildings located next to the Alhambra. Originally, the Generalife was the recreational estate of the Nasrid monarchs, a place where they could enjoy nature and escape political responsibilities. The gardens of the Generalife are known for their landscape design, with fountains, courtyards, terraces, and pathways, offering panoramic views of the city of Granada. In addition to the gardens, the Generalife includes the Palace of the Generalife, a building that served as the summer residence of the kings.
These beautiful places are part of the luxury Al Andalus train route, which, in addition to Granada, runs the well-known Andalusian route of the Al Andalus train from April to November through Malaga, Úbeda and Baeza, Cordoba, Ronda, Jerez, Cadiz, and Seville.
